Qualcomm and Google have partnered to extend software support for Android smartphones. With Google’s assistance, Qualcomm has committed to providing longer support for all manufacturers using its most powerful processors. This move could extend the software lifespan of Android devices to eight years.
Extended Support for High-End Devices
The extended support applies only to Android devices running Qualcomm’s latest processors. Initially, the eight-year support period will cover devices powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite processors. Later this year, the policy will also include smartphones with Snapdragon 8 and Snapdragon 7 chips. Similar commitments are expected for at least the next five generations of Qualcomm processors.
These chips are found in flagship and near-flagship phones, so budget devices are unlikely to receive the same update guarantees. While nothing prevents Qualcomm from offering extended support for lower-end processors, manufacturers typically prioritize longevity for premium devices. Budget smartphones may physically last eight years, but performance degradation and a lack of manufacturer incentives make long-term software support less likely.
Samsung and Google currently lead the industry with seven years of guaranteed security patches and OS updates, adds NIX Solutions. Qualcomm’s extended support could help other manufacturers achieve similar commitments. This collaboration may lead to more durable software support across the Android ecosystem.
