NIX Solutions: New Google Search Bar Widget Design

Google has updated the appearance of its search bar widget, which is commonly found on the home screen of Android devices. In the previous version, the widget featured a rounded design with the “G” logo positioned on the left and shortcuts for the microphone and Google Lens on the right. With the latest changes, the design now includes an additional shortcut—Circle to Search. This new feature is visually emphasized within the widget and marked with a distinct circular shape, setting it apart from other icons.

The overall width of the panel has slightly increased, aligning with the Material 3 Expressive design concept. This approach reflects Google’s ongoing transition toward the visual language of future Android versions. The newly added Circle to Search shortcut stands out not only through its dedicated space but also as a core element of the redesign.

Functionality and Availability

The Circle to Search feature enables users to complete a variety of tasks, including activating AI Mode for enhanced searches, translating text, identifying songs, checking the weather, and using live translation via the device’s camera. The integration of this function shows Google’s continued push to embed AI tools into everyday mobile use.

In terms of layout, the minimum widget width that supports all visual elements is now 4×1. This replaces the previous minimum of 3×1. Transparency settings also affect the look of the widget more noticeably than before, offering users some degree of visual customization based on their home screen preferences.

The updated widget is currently live in version 16.17 of the Google App, which is still in beta, notes NIX Solutions. Once testing is complete, the redesign is expected to roll out more widely to the general public. We’ll keep you updated as more integrations become available or as changes are finalized in upcoming versions.
