NIX Solutions: Android 15 Released for Developers

Google has officially released Android 15, but only for developers so far. The release for users is expected soon, according to The Verge. The new version of Android introduces several features, including the ability to recognize music using Google Assistant, receive earthquake alerts, and read web pages aloud in the Chrome browser.

Enhanced Interaction and Security

Google has focused on fine-tuning the interaction between applications and devices in the new operating system. Future updates will include support for signing into accounts on applications and sites with one touch using a fingerprint scanner, improved theft protection, optimized multitasking for devices with large screens, and the ability to restrict access to certain applications.

One significant update to Android 15 is the TalkBack screen reader, introduced at the Google I/O conference. This utility is now integrated with the Gemini AI assistant and can voice descriptions of images on the smartphone screen, improving access to visual information for people with disabilities.

Expanded Features and Updates

The Circle to Search function has received an interesting music recognition feature, similar to Shazam. By clicking a special button, users can get information about a song, including its title, artist, and a link to the video on YouTube. Circle to Search will recognize music from both videos and tracks playing over loudspeakers in public places.

An important innovation is the expansion of the earthquake alert system, which will now be available to all US states and six of its territories. Previously, Google collaborated with the US Geological Survey (USGS) and its ShakeAlert system to provide warnings in California, Oregon, and Washington, using data from traditional seismometers. Now, American users without access to ShakeAlert will receive earthquake alerts using data from the accelerometers of their Android devices. If multiple devices in an area detect vibrations, the Android Earthquake Alerts system will analyze “data received from users to determine whether an earthquake is occurring,” Google explains. This function is already implemented in nearly 100 countries worldwide.

In addition to the above innovations, Android 15 will feature a read-aloud option for web pages in the Chrome browser and support for offline Google Maps in Wear OS 5, notes NIX Solutions. We’ll keep you updated as more features roll out.

The source code for Android 15 is already available as part of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). Pixel smartphone users will receive the update in the coming weeks, but owners of devices from Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, Nothing, and other brands will have to wait a few more months.
