NIXSOLUTIONS: Android Backup to Include SIM Soon

The backup archive of an Android device will soon include a SIM card, which should make changing phones easier. A mention of this upcoming feature was discovered in one of the preview builds of Google Play Services, according to Android Authority.

Currently, Android’s modern backup tools allow users to save application lists, contacts, SMS/MMS/RCS messages, call history, and some device settings. Combined with Google Photos for storing photos and videos, these tools significantly simplify the process of replacing a smartphone, particularly when it’s lost, broken, or stolen.

Now, Google appears to be expanding these capabilities. In the future, a SIM card—most likely an eSIM—may also be backed up and restored through a user’s account. This mention was found in version 25.16.33 of the Google Play Services beta, which includes a message indicating that Google services will soon be able to “back up contacts, call history, device settings, applications and their data, SMS and MMS messages, and SIM cards.” While it likely refers to eSIMs rather than physical SIM cards, this addition could prove useful for streamlining the phone replacement process.

Simplifying eSIM Transfers and Future Updates

Google is already working on making it easier to transfer eSIMs between devices. Being able to restore an eSIM from a backup—even in cases where access to the old device is lost—could make this transition smoother and more user-friendly. While the technical details of how this function will operate have not been disclosed, it’s also unclear whether mobile carriers will need to be involved in the process.

No official timeline has been shared yet regarding when this feature might roll out, notes NIXSOLUTIONS. However, the mention in the beta version of Google Play Services suggests active development is underway. We’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available and as Google reveals further integration details.
