The Browser Company, known for its alternative Arc browser, has launched the Arc Search app for Android in open beta. Initially exclusive to the Apple ecosystem, Arc Search is now expanding its reach, with the company planning to make it a cross-platform app.
Expanding Beyond Apple Ecosystem
Arc was first introduced within the Apple ecosystem, with versions for macOS and iOS. A version for Windows was also released to broaden the browser’s availability. Now, the Arc Search app for Android has been launched in an open beta after a four-week closed beta testing phase with 18,000 users. Earlier this year, the company introduced Arc Search for iPhone, focusing on simplifying the search process.
Unique Features of Arc Search
The standout feature of Arc Search is “Browse for Me,” which allows the browser to automatically navigate through multiple pages based on the user’s query. Instead of showing traditional search results, it generates a summarized page with relevant information and links to sources. For example, when searching for a recipe, users won’t need to sift through countless pages. The AI-powered feature filters out irrelevant data and presents concise results. However, this approach has faced criticism, as it can reduce traffic to smaller websites whose content is summarized.
Plans for Android and Future Updates
The Android version includes essential tools like an ad blocker, pop-up blocker, and an automatic tab archiving function. However, some features available on iOS, such as Pinch to summary and Call to ask, are not yet present in the Android version, notes NIXSolutions. The company aims to release the general version of Arc Search for Android by the end of autumn.
With 1.6 million downloads on iOS, Arc Search is gaining traction. The CEO, Josh Miller, has also hinted that the company’s products may eventually become paid offerings for both consumers and businesses. We’ll keep you updated as the app continues to evolve across platforms.
