Google continues to expand its use of Gemini AI by integrating it into its services. The latest development sees Gemini AI appearing in the text selection menu on Android devices, enabling users to instantly request additional information related to selected text.
How Does the Feature Work?
The feature was discovered during an analysis of the Google app 16.8.31.sa.arm64 beta APK, as reported by Android Authority. While the feature isn’t yet functional, the presence of the code suggests an imminent release. Here’s how it will work:
- Select any text in a compatible app (browser, notes, etc.).
- Open the menu by tapping the three dots in the pop-up window.
- Choose the “Ask Gemini” option.
- Receive relevant information about the selected text from Gemini AI.
This feature will function in browsers (including Firefox) and in apps that use the standard Android text selection menu. However, apps with custom text selection tools might not support this feature initially. We’ll keep you updated as more integrations become available.
A New Addition to Google’s AI Features
This new tool is similar to Google’s existing Circle to Search, where users can highlight objects on the screen to get AI-generated explanations, adds NIX Solutions. At the MWC 2025, Google also revealed additional features for analyzing screen content. The new “Ask Gemini” option for text selection will make Gemini AI even more accessible, especially for users whose apps don’t yet support Circle to Search.
Currently, the “Ask Gemini” feature is not available for the public, and there is no confirmed release date. However, Google is actively testing the feature, and it is expected to be included in a future update to the Google app or Android UI. We’ll keep you updated on any developments regarding the feature’s release.
