NIXSolutions: Android 15 QPR1 Key Features and Updates

Google releases quarterly platform releases (QPRs) to bring intermediate updates with essential features. Android 15 QPR1, unveiled on December 5, introduces notable enhancements. Here’s a breakdown of the changes.

What’s New in Android 15 QPR1

The main system settings page has been redesigned. Items like “Storage,” “Battery,” and “System” are grouped logically, while the “Google” section now appears at the top with a profile avatar and username, akin to iOS and One UI.

For Pixel Tablet users, widgets can now be pinned to the lock screen. These widgets, accessible by swiping right, allow interaction without unlocking the tablet—ideal for avoiding private information exposure. The window preset for tablets is also functional, though it requires enabling developer mode. This feature includes a taskbar and separate app windows for enhanced multitasking.

Battery care features have expanded. Users can now limit charging to 80%, a useful tool to extend battery lifespan. The existing adaptive charging technology, which adjusts based on usage habits, remains available.

Pixel 8 and newer smartphones support external display output via USB-C, complete with resolution and orientation adjustments. This improvement hints at Google’s ongoing work on a desktop mode.

Pop-up notifications have been streamlined to avoid interruptions during full-screen activities like gaming or video playback. Other minor updates include:

  • Brighter thematic desktop icons.
  • Improved animations for quick settings.
  • Adjusted keyboard switcher functionality (single press for switching, long press for manual selection).
  • Updated screen recording and broadcast indicators.

Device Compatibility and Extended Support

The update is compatible with Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a, 7, 7 Pro, 7a, and Pixel Fold. NIXSolutions notes that Google has extended support for these devices to five years from their release date. Pixel 8 and newer devices maintain a seven-year support window.

Additionally, the Android 15 QPR1 code is now in the AOSP database, enabling other manufacturers to adopt its features in their devices.
