Google is making updates to Google Play on Android devices to improve the visibility of apps that offer widgets. The changes include a new search filter for widgets, widget badges on app listings, and an editorial page dedicated to showcasing them.
Improved Widget Discoverability
Product manager Yinka Taiwo-Peters acknowledges that finding and understanding widgets has been a challenge. “Historically, one of the challenges of investing in widget development has been discoverability and user understanding,” Taiwo-Peters states. “You asked for a better way for users to find and use your widgets, and we’re delivering on that.” They also emphasize the importance of user adoption, noting that the effort to create and maintain widgets must be justified by demand.
The new search filter will make it easier for users to find apps with widgets. The widget badge on app listings removes uncertainty and highlights an app’s widget offerings, encouraging users to explore them. Additionally, a curated editorial page will feature collections of notable widgets, providing users with recommendations.
Google is also working on updated widget detection tools, which are expected to be available soon, adds NIX Solutions. These improvements aim to simplify the process for both developers and users, ensuring that widgets become a more accessible and integrated part of the Android experience.
