Microsoft has launched a new feature for Windows that simplifies working with Android mobile devices. Users can now access the storage of their Android phones directly from Windows Explorer, without needing a USB cable. This new capability began rolling out in October and is available for both Windows 10 and Windows 11 users.
Seamless Android-Windows Integration
The existing Link to Phone app allows Windows and Android devices to interact, and Microsoft continues to enhance integration between platforms. The new Android in File Explorer feature expands on this integration. It works through the Cross-Device Experience Host component, which receives updates via the Microsoft Store. This functionality adds new possibilities for managing Android devices from a Windows environment.
To use this feature, users need devices running Android 11 or later and an updated version of the Link to Windows app (version 1.24071 or newer). It also requires the latest Windows 10 or Windows 11 updates, along with the Device Interoperability Hub update from the Microsoft Store. Once all components are updated, users can wirelessly manage their phone’s files directly from Windows Explorer via a Wi-Fi connection, eliminating the need for a USB cable.
Wireless File Management Made Easy
After setup, Android phones appear as shortcuts in the File Explorer sidebar. From there, users can rename, move, copy, or delete files on their Android devices. Any deleted files are sent to a new Recycle Bin folder on the Android device, where they remain for 30 days before being automatically removed.
Wireless file transfer offers speeds up to 1.2 Gbps, making it a fast and practical alternative to USB connections. NIXSOLUTIONS adds that the integration with Windows Search enables users to search for files on their Android devices directly from the taskbar.
While this feature complements the Link to Phone app, it operates independently, meaning users do not need to activate Link to Phone to access their Android files through Windows Explorer. We’ll keep you updated as new features are released to further enhance this experience.
